Capture These Moments

Capture These Moments

- 3/7/18 -

As most of you may know, I LOVE taking pictures. My personal Instagram account is filled to the brim with “artsy” and “professional” pictures. I only started taking them a few months ago. I had been in love with capturing sweet moments and doing cool photo shoots for years. Some may say that on a dark and windy night, Katelin Lucia CREATED the selfie.

I’m kidding. All jokes aside, I seriously was instagramming at the ripe age of 13. So, when I first laid hands on my mom’s expensive and beautiful camera- I was done for. It has really been something I genuinely enjoy. I take pictures of nature, my brothers, my life. Those are the personal ones. The ones I keep for myself all stored away on a private Instagram account.
But, the ones that I showcase are usually self-portraits. Taking pictures of myself in some world may seem conceited. I don’t see it that way. At all. My great friend Jaelyn Wratchford, Miss Berkeley County’s Outstanding Teen,  once wrote and spoke (not exact), “for the love of mercy, take pictures of yourself!” I cannot agree more. Taking pictures of yourself isn’t selfish or vain. It’s showcasing your growth and smile that absolutely radiates through time. It’s a form of practing positive self-image. (Hah, get it? It’s an actual self-image?)

Taking pictures of myself and others has created, not only a new hobby, but an expressive and fun way to feel things. I take joy in it. I’ve come to appreciate new things that I never noticed before. The way the light hits people’s faces makes my heart skip a beat. When my little brother throws his head back to laugh and I capture his happiness just at the right moment. When I’m tired but my eyes flutter to the camera- and I make a connection- as if the camera is a person and can see all of my inner emotions. I feel all of it. Beauty is everywhere! There is beauty in nature, others, and in myself. I love capturing it.

Here’s a challenge for everyone: take pictures! Take pictures of your mom, your dad, your siblings, the old lady next door, flowers, trees, birds, your cat, your dog, and MOST IMPORTANTLY- yourself. Capture the moment.

                                                                                                             Selfie often,

Katie.
